Touch screen issue with IDE

Harald Schneider

Hi David

On a touch screen PC, I have the following problem:

I can place buttons etc. via drag and drop on the canvas. This works perfectly. But as soon as I move one of the controls with my finger or a stylus, the canvas itself behaves like it would be grouped with the controls on it. The complete canvas underneath moves with it.

Maybe there is some touch / gesture property missing in the Delphi component?

Hello Harald,

It's difficult to say... maybe the designer component, maybe others, experiment some unexpected behaviour: App Builder has not been designed to work in touch screens, and, even when the adaptation can be painless for "simple" programs (due to the good work of the Microsoft Windows and Delphi teams, in this case), probably, it's not easy to adapt something more complex to be used in touch screens, except if we take care about all the possible issues from the scratch. But I think this is not really required for App Builder... and in fact I can't try it here in a real touch screen, so double difficult in order to try it in a real environment and look for possible solutions for the possible issues.

OK, I see ... just thought it would be a property, which is set wrong on the underlying component. it is not worth to dig deeper, I share your point of view!

Just to complete this topic:

Windows allows to configure a Pen tool to emulate mouse events. This works fine with AB. The issue only appears when using fingers instead of the pen.

Hello Harald,

I must declare my ignorance in touch screens.... in principle, I can't understand why a pen is different than a finger, that is, why they differs in their configuration. Of course there must be a reason... and maybe another possible configuration that I simply unknow... :-(

Harald Schneider
Only Microsoft knows. Do they? :-)

Anyway... probably there is nothing like a mouse and a keyboard. I don't want to compare App Builder with Delphi nor other IDE... but, as an user of more IDEs (in addition to App Builder), I can't imagine to work with it using a touch screen... maybe for some specific actions, yes... maybe we need to edit something... but certainly just think to work without a keyboard and a mouse scare me. Maybe I am too old!!?? :-)

Harald Schneider

It is a nice to have in certain situations - nothing more.

Mouse + keyboard are unbeatable. So you are not too old .-)
